Community ServiceĀ
Brooktondale Community Center
On Saturday, October 5th, 2024, I attended a Service Saturday where I helped bake pies for Brooktondale Community's annual "Pie Bee!" Our group helped to make and bake 45 pies for the community, where I peeled apples and rolled out the pie crust. At the community center, children, adults, and older adults helped to assemble the pies. This event provided an immense amount of community-building opportunities, uniting the different generations towards a common goal. The experienced adults were teaching me and the younger kids how to carry out traditional tasks. My key takeaway was learning through failure. Rolling out the pie crusts was very difficult as I had never done that before. I had to scrap countless crusts because I messed up the dough, but as I became more and more familiar with the dough-rolling process, I began to evolve from solely making the bottom crusts to making the top crusts too!
